How to read a Korean number
- 1Type a number the way you saw it: 1,250,000, 125만, 3억 5천만 or a rent listing like 500/50.
- 2See it in 만 units, the way Korean prices are written: 1,250,000 is 125만.
- 3See the Sino-Korean reading (백이십오만) and press Listen to hear it.
- 4For numbers up to 99, see the native Korean form too, used to count things and people.
Good to know
- Korean groups big numbers by 10,000 (만), not by 1,000. 10만 is 100,000 and 100만 is 1,000,000.
- 억 is 100,000,000. A 2억 jeonse deposit is ₩200,000,000.
- Rent listings put the deposit first and the monthly rent second (보증금 1억원 / 40만원). This tool reads a short form like 500/50 in 만 원: a ₩5,000,000 deposit and ₩500,000 a month.
- Prices, phone numbers, dates and minutes use Sino-Korean numbers. Counting things, people and hours uses native Korean numbers.
Two number systems in Korean
Sino-Korean numbers (일, 이, 삼, 사, 오) come from Chinese. You use them for money, phone numbers, dates, months, minutes, floors and room numbers. 3,500 won is 삼천오백 원.
Native Korean numbers (하나, 둘, 셋, 넷, 다섯) go up to 99. You use them to count things and people, for hours and for age in everyday talk. Before a counting word, 하나, 둘, 셋, 넷 and 스물 shorten to 한, 두, 세, 네 and 스무: 한 개 (one item), 두 명 (two people), 스무 살 (20 years old).
Above 9,999 Korean counts in steps of 10,000: 만 (10,000), 억 (100,000,000) and 조 (1,000,000,000,000). So 1,000,000 is 백만, "one hundred 만".
Questions
How do you say 10,000 in Korean?
만. Korean has a single word for 10,000, so 50,000 is 오만 (five 만) and 100,000 is 십만 (ten 만).
What does 500/50 mean on a rent listing?
This tool reads it in 만 원 (10,000 won): a ₩5,000,000 deposit (보증금) and ₩500,000 monthly rent (월세).
How much is 1억 won?
1억 is 100,000,000, so 1억 원 is one hundred million won.
When do I use 하나, 둘, 셋 and when 일, 이, 삼?
Use 일, 이, 삼 (Sino-Korean) for money, phone numbers, dates and minutes. Use 하나, 둘, 셋 (native Korean) to count things and people and to tell the hour: 세 시 is 3 o'clock, 삼 분 is 3 minutes.
Do I say 일백 or 백?
Both are correct. In speech people often leave out 일 (one) before 십, 백, 천 and 만: 10 is 십, 100 is 백, 1,000 is 천, 10,000 is 만. When you write an exact amount out in words, as on a contract, 일 is usually written in: 일백, 일천. For 1억 both 일억 and 억 are correct.
