Character counter (글자수 세기)
Paste your cover letter (자기소개서) or any application answer. See characters with and without spaces, bytes, and how many you have left.
How to check your character count
- 1Paste or type your text in the box.
- 2Read the counts: with spaces, without spaces, and in bytes.
- 3Pick the limit from the application, for example 500 or 1,000, or type your own.
- 4Choose how the application counts (with spaces gives the higher number) and watch the bar.
Good to know
- Some forms count with spaces (공백 포함) and some without (공백 제외). If the form does not say, plan for the count with spaces: it is the higher number.
- If a form gives its limit in bytes (바이트), check which count it uses: Bytes (Hangul 2) or UTF-8 bytes (Hangul 3). In the Bytes count, Hangul counts as 2 bytes and English letters, numbers and spaces as 1, so a 1,000-byte limit holds about 500 Korean characters.
- Line breaks count as one character here. If the form shows its own counter, go by that number.
- Your text stays in your browser.
How Korean applications count characters
If an application limits your cover letter (자기소개서) answer, check the wording next to the box: it may count with spaces (공백 포함) or without spaces (공백 제외).
If a form counts bytes (바이트) instead, check which count it uses. In the older 2-byte count a Korean character takes 2 bytes, so the same limit holds about half as many Korean characters as English ones. In UTF-8 it takes 3.
Write a little under the limit, in case the form counts a little differently from this page.
Questions
Does a character count include spaces?
It depends on the form. 공백 포함 means spaces count; 공백 제외 means they do not. If the form does not say, count with spaces: that number is the higher one.
How many bytes is one Korean character?
In the older Korean 2-byte count, one Hangul character is 2 bytes and one English letter, number or space is 1 byte. In UTF-8, the standard encoding for web services, a Hangul character is 3 bytes.
Does a line break count as a character?
In this counter, yes: each line break counts as one character. If the application form shows its own counter, go by that number.
Is my cover letter saved anywhere?
No. The counting happens in your browser. When you close the page, the text is gone, so keep a copy in your own file.
