Good to know

  • Seollal (설날), Chuseok (추석) and Buddha's Birthday (부처님오신날) follow the lunar calendar, so their solar dates change each year.
  • Some Koreans celebrate their birthday on the lunar date (음력 생일). To find it this year, enter this year with the lunar month and day of birth.
  • Some lunar years add a leap month (윤달). It has the same number as the month before it.
  • When some holidays fall on a weekend or on another holiday, the next working day is a substitute holiday (대체공휴일).

The Korean lunar calendar

Korea uses the solar (Gregorian) calendar for daily life, but the lunar calendar (음력) still sets the dates of the biggest holidays, such as Seollal and Chuseok. A lunar month starts on the new moon and lasts 29 or 30 days.

Seollal is the first day of the first lunar month, and Chuseok is the 15th day of the eighth lunar month. Each has a holiday day before and after it, which makes three days off in a row.

This converter uses the lunar calendar built into your browser, set to Korean time. The holiday list follows the official calendar for each year.
