How to convert PDF to HWP

  1. 1Choose your PDF, or drop it on the box above.
  2. 2Pick Editable text or Exact look.
  3. 3Select Convert to HWP. The .hwp file saves to your downloads folder.

Which option to choose

  • Editable text rebuilds the paragraphs with their sizes and indents. It works best for letters, notices and reports. Tables and side-by-side columns may lose their layout.
  • Exact look puts each PDF page into the file as a picture. It works best for forms and scans, but the text cannot be edited.
  • A scanned PDF has no text to pull out, so it is always saved with Exact look.

What is an HWP file?

HWP is the file format of Hangul (한글), the word processor made by Hancom. Korean government offices use it widely, so you will see it in forms, notices and application packs.

HWPX is the newer version of the format. It keeps the document as XML files inside a ZIP archive, and it is a Korean national standard (KS X 6101).

This tool reads both formats in your browser, so you do not need to install Hangul.

Your file stays on your device

The page loads the converter into your browser, and your browser does the work. Your file is not sent to Seoulstart or to anyone else.

We count when a file is opened or converted, its file types, page count and size, and how long the conversion took. We do not see file names or what is inside your files.

Questions

Can I edit the HWP file afterwards?

With Editable text, yes. With Exact look, each page is a picture, so you can add text on top but not change what is there.

Can I get an HWPX file instead?

Yes. After choosing the PDF, select HWPX under Other formats.

Does it read text in scanned PDFs?

No. It does not do text recognition (OCR). A scanned PDF is saved as a picture of each page.

Is my file uploaded to a server?

No. The conversion runs in your browser on your own device. Seoulstart does not receive your file or its contents.

Is this free?

Yes. There is no sign-up, no watermark and no limit on the number of files.

Which files does it open?

HWP files from Hangul 2002 and later (the HWP 5.0 format), HWPX files, PDF files and Word .docx files. Files from Hangul 97 and earlier (HWP 3 and older formats) do not open yet.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes. It works in current versions of Chrome, Safari, Edge and Firefox on phones and computers. Large files take longer on a phone.

The converter runs on rhwp, an open-source HWP engine (MIT License). PDFs use the Nanum Myeongjo and Nanum Gothic fonts (SIL Open Font License). rhwp · Nanum
