What is an HWP file?
HWP is the file format of Hangul (한글), the word processor made by Hancom. Korean government offices use it widely, so you will see it in forms, notices and application packs.
HWPX is the newer version of the format. It keeps the document as XML files inside a ZIP archive, and it is a Korean national standard (KS X 6101).
This tool reads both formats in your browser, so you do not need to install Hangul.
Your file stays on your device
The page loads the converter into your browser, and your browser does the work. Your file is not sent to Seoulstart or to anyone else.
We count when a file is opened or converted, its file types, page count and size, and how long the conversion took. We do not see file names or what is inside your files.
Questions
Why can't my Hangul open an HWPX file?
HWPX is the newer format. If your version of Hangul cannot read it, converting gives you a file in the older HWP format. Open it in Hangul and check it before you send it.
Will the file change?
The text, tables and images carry over, but the layout can shift a little. Check the preview of the converted file before you send it.
Is my file uploaded to a server?
No. The conversion runs in your browser on your own device. Seoulstart does not receive your file or its contents.
Is this free?
Yes. There is no sign-up, no watermark and no limit on the number of files.
Which files does it open?
HWP files from Hangul 2002 and later (the HWP 5.0 format), HWPX files, PDF files and Word .docx files. Files from Hangul 97 and earlier (HWP 3 and older formats) do not open yet.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes. It works in current versions of Chrome, Safari, Edge and Firefox on phones and computers. Large files take longer on a phone.
