Install KakaoTalk, Naver Map, and Papago before you land. Those three apps cover messaging, getting around, and translation for most foreign residents in Korea, and they work before you have an Alien Registration Card (외국인등록증). KakaoTalk can start on a foreign number. Install Naver Map and Papago on Wi-Fi before you fly.

Everything else on this list is situational. Delivery and shopping apps come once you have somewhere to receive orders. Banking and government apps wait on the card and identity verification (본인인증). If an app rejects you for no clear reason, you are usually missing one of the four keys mapped in our Korean apps gate guide.

For browser portals, job boards, and hospital sites, see essential websites for foreign residents.

Install first: the day-one stack

These are the top apps for foreigners in Korea in the narrow sense: the ones that make the first week livable.

KakaoTalk is the default messenger. Landlords, delivery drivers, coworkers, and language-exchange partners will ask for it. You can register with a number issued outside Korea. Features that touch payments wait until identity verification is in place. Full setup walkthrough: KakaoTalk setup guide.

Naver Map (네이버 지도) is the map you will open more than any other. Walking directions, bus and subway arrivals, and small-business search are more reliable here than on Google Maps in Korea. Switch the language to English in settings. Deep dive: Naver Map guide.

Papago (파파고) is Naver's translator. Camera mode for menus and signs, conversation mode for face-to-face talk, and offline text packs for when data drops. Comparison with Google Translate: translation apps guide.

Kakao T handles taxis and ride-hailing. English UI is available. Full walkthrough: Kakao T guide.

Subway Korea is a simple English subway planner for Seoul and other major cities. Naver Map already covers transit, so this is optional. Details on transfers and bus colors: transit apps guide.

Buy a prepaid transit card with cash in your first days. Which product to pick (T-money, Climate Card, K-Pass) depends on how long you stay: transit card guide.

Add next: food, shopping, housing

Once you have an address and a way to pay, these apps take over daily errands.

Baemin (배달의민족) is the largest food-delivery app. In-app English, Japanese, and Chinese. Foreign cards accepted. No Korean phone number required for signup. Coupang Eats is the common English-friendly alternative. Full comparison: food delivery apps guide.

Coupang is the default for household goods, with same-day or next-morning delivery on many items. Checkout is often smoother with a Korean-issued card once you have one.

Daangn / Karrot (당근) is the neighborhood second-hand app. Most foreign residents use it to furnish a new place cheaply. The UI is Korean-first; listings are mostly photos and prices.

Zigbang and Dabang are the main rental listing apps. Zigbang's App Store listing declares Korean and English. Filters for deposit (보증금) and monthly rent (월세) are learnable quickly. Pair them with our first-month housing timeline.

After your Alien Registration Card: money and government

Do not start here in week one. Banking and government apps are the ones that reject new arrivals for missing keys.

Toss is the banking and payments super-app many foreign residents end up living in. Its App Store listing declares English. You still need an Alien Registration Card, a phone line in your own name, and identity verification before it is reliable. English coverage across major bank apps: banking apps guide. Pay apps compared: Korean pay apps.

Gov24 and HiKorea are the government and immigration surfaces you will return to for certificates and stay paperwork. English is real on some screens and missing on the submission forms behind them. What actually works: government apps guide.

Emergency Ready App translates Korea's disaster text alerts into many languages. Install it once you have a Korean number so loud Korean alerts are not the only warning you get. How the alert levels work: emergency safety apps guide.

Install order that matches how Korea gates apps

WhenAppsWhy this timing
Before you flyKakaoTalk, Naver Map, PapagoWork on Wi-Fi. KakaoTalk can start on a foreign number
First week in KoreaKakao T, prepaid transit card, Subway KoreaGetting around without banking
Once you have an addressBaemin or Coupang Eats, Coupang, DaangnDelivery and second-hand furniture
After Alien Registration CardToss or bank app, Kakao Pay, Gov24 / HiKorea, Emergency ReadyMoney and government gates open

The Digital Korea hub explains the four keys behind that table: Alien Registration Card, own-name phone line, Korean payment method, and identity verification. Read it when an app fails and you cannot tell which key is missing.

What this list is not

This is not a tourist packing list of eSIM and attraction-ticket apps. It is the resident stack: messaging, maps, translation, food, shopping, housing, money, and government.

It is also not a claim that every app has full English. English coverage is usually partial. Each linked guide says where the translation stops.

Frequently asked questions

What are the top apps for foreigners in Korea?

Start with KakaoTalk, Naver Map, and Papago. Add Kakao T for taxis, Baemin or Coupang Eats for food delivery, and Coupang for shopping. After your Alien Registration Card, add Toss or a bank app, then government apps. That stack covers daily life for most foreign residents.

Which apps should I install before I arrive in Korea?

Install KakaoTalk, Naver Map, and Papago on Wi-Fi before you fly. Those three work without an Alien Registration Card. KakaoTalk can start on a foreign number. Leave banking and government apps until after registration.

Do I need a Korean phone number for every app?

No. KakaoTalk can start on a foreign number. Baemin does not require a Korean phone number. Banking, payments, and most government apps do need a Korean line registered in your own name plus identity verification.

Show all 7 questions

Is Google Maps enough in Korea?

No. Use Naver Map as your primary map. Google Maps has historically lacked reliable walking and transit directions in Korea because of map-data export rules. KakaoMap is a solid backup.

Which food delivery app is best for foreigners?

Baemin is the largest and supports English, Japanese, and Chinese in-app, with foreign-card checkout. Coupang Eats is the usual English-friendly alternative. Yogiyo is a third option.

When can I set up banking and payment apps?

After your Alien Registration Card. Open a bank account first, then set up identity verification, then Toss or Kakao Pay. Trying those apps in week one is what produces unexplained rejection screens.

How is this different from the websites list?

This page is phone apps to install. Our websites guide covers portals, job boards, hospitals, and news sites you open in a browser. Use both: apps for the first week on your phone, websites for visas, jobs, and paperwork.
