You have just arrived in Korea. Within the first day, someone asks for your KakaoTalk. The question assumes you already have it set up and verified.
Your foreign phone number is enough to get started. KakaoTalk accepts registration with a phone number issued outside Korea, verified by SMS. Set it up now with the number you have. Some features, including Kakao Pay and Korean bank account linking, have their own identity verification requirements under Korean financial law. Those steps come later. The prerequisite is covered at the end of this guide.
This guide covers mechanical setup only: registration, privacy settings, account recovery, backup, multi-device use, and how channels work. Registering with a foreign phone number
KakaoTalk accepts registration with a phone number issued outside Korea. On the registration screen, select your country and enter your number in local format without the country code prefix. The app sends a verification SMS to confirm. Once confirmed, you can use the app for messaging.
Friends can find you by your phone number, by a KakaoTalk ID you set, or by QR code.
What Korean users see when you register with a foreign number
Accounts registered with a non-Korean phone number display differently to Korean users who have not yet added you as a friend. Kakao shows an orange globe icon in place of the profile image, and displays a warning popup when the other person opens the chat for the first time. The country of registration appears at the top of the chat. The warning clears once they add you as a friend.
This feature is called Globe Signal (글로브 시그널). Kakao designed it to help Korean users identify potential phishing accounts. It explains why some Korean contacts may take a moment before replying. Kakao clears the marker once the other person adds you as a friend.
If the verification SMS does not arrive
Check that you entered your number in local format without the country code prefix. The registration form separates the country code from the local digits: enter only the local number in the main field.
A separate issue can block login regardless of the phone number: the country login restriction (국가별 로그인 제한). This is a security service that blocks login attempts from countries not on your allowed list. Kakao turns it on automatically. Resolve it by completing additional verification through the app, or by verifying through a registered email address. You may encounter this when signing up from outside Korea or when traveling after your account is established.
Switching to a Korean number
When your Korean SIM arrives and you want the app to use the new number, you change the registered number in place. You do not need to delete the app, reinstall it, or restore a backup.
Step 1. Open KakaoTalk and go to More (…) > Settings (⚙️).
Step 2. Select 'Manage' (관리) to the right of your profile name.
Step 3. Select Phone number (전화번호), then Change phone number (전화번호 변경).
Step 4. Enter your new Korean number and complete the verification the app sends to it.
Your chats, friends and profile stay where they are. Kakao documents this path as needing no reinstall, which matters because the delete-and-reinstall route costs you anything a backup does not carry: media, files, secret chats and open chats.
Changing your device is a different operation, and that one does involve backing up and restoring. Back up before you switch phones.
Protecting account access before the switch
A pre-registered backup email can substitute for SMS verification when the original phone is unavailable. Set this up before you lose access to the old number. Go to More > Settings > Kakao Account > Two-step verification (2단계 인증) and add an email address. You can also do this from the Kakao Account website at accounts.kakao.com.
KakaoTalk ID and QR code: being found without sharing your number
By default, people find you on KakaoTalk by having your phone number in their contacts. Two paths avoid sharing the number.
KakaoTalk ID
A KakaoTalk ID (카카오톡 ID) is a secondary identifier you set yourself. Share the ID in situations where you prefer not to give out your phone number.
To create one: go to More (…) > Settings (⚙️). Select 'Manage' (관리) to the right of your profile name, then find the KakaoTalk ID option.
Two rules apply that are easy to miss:
The ID can be changed exactly once. That single change is available only after 24 hours have passed since the ID was first created. After the change is made, the ID cannot be modified again. Pick carefully.
You can also limit who can find you by ID. The switch is 'Allow ID search' (ID 검색 허용), at More (…) > Settings (⚙️) > 'Manage' (관리) next to your profile > KakaoTalk ID. Turning it off means you do not appear in KakaoTalk ID search at all. That includes people who already know your ID and type it in directly, because adding by ID is an ID search.
When someone wants to add you by ID, they open the friend-add screen and look for an option to search by ID.
QR code
The QR code is faster for in-person meetings. Show your code to the other person, or scan theirs, and the friend add completes on the spot. The QR path also works when one person has privacy settings that limit phone-number-based friend adding.
You can find your QR code from the Add Friends option.
Privacy settings to change on day one
Three areas are worth reviewing before you share your KakaoTalk contact widely.
Who can add you by phone number. In Settings, under the Friends section, look for the option controlling whether people who have your number in their contacts can add you automatically. Turning it off means people need to be added by you directly, rather than appearing as friends because they saved your number.
Auto-add from contacts. A separate setting controls whether your own phone's contact list is scanned and those people are added as KakaoTalk friends automatically. If you prefer to add contacts one at a time, check this setting.
ID search visibility. If you have set a KakaoTalk ID, 'Allow ID search' (ID 검색 허용) determines whether you turn up in ID search. It sits with the ID itself, at More (…) > Settings (⚙️) > 'Manage' (관리) > KakaoTalk ID. Turning it off removes you from ID search entirely rather than limiting it to people who already have your ID.
None of these settings affect your ability to add other people. They only change how others can find you.
Backing up and restoring your chat history
Backup does not run automatically in the background. You trigger it manually. This means chat history is lost if you change phones or accounts without backing up first.
Running a backup
Go to More > Settings > Backup (백업) > Temporary Conversation Backup (대화 임시 백업). Create a password. The backup stores your text messages.
What the free backup does not include
Free backup excludes:
- Photos, videos, and attached files from ordinary chats
- Secret chats
- Open chat history
- Messages that exceed the character-length threshold for individual messages
There is also a limited restore window. Back up immediately before a device change, not days in advance. If you wait past the window, the backup data expires and cannot be recovered.
Talk Cloud (톡클라우드) extends backup beyond the manual scope. Note before relying on it: Kakao documents the service as restricted for users who are not Korean KakaoTalk users, so an account registered to a non-Korean number may not be able to use it.
Restoring on a new device
Log in with your existing Kakao account on the new device. After phone-number verification completes, the app prompts for the backup password and begins restoration.
One condition that makes restoration impossible
If you withdraw from KakaoTalk or from the parent Kakao Account, restoration becomes impossible. There is no recovery path after account withdrawal.
Using KakaoTalk on multiple devices
PC
The PC version mirrors your phone account. Log in with the same Kakao account used on your phone. To download the PC app, search for KakaoTalk on your platform's app store or find the download link on Kakao's website.
Tablet
Supported tablets, including iPad, offer a "use together with another device" mode. Log in on the tablet with the same account used on the main phone. Both devices stay logged in and usable in parallel. This differs from a standard login, which would end the phone session rather than run alongside it. A tablet that does not support the mode can only be used as your main KakaoTalk device, which signs the phone out.
Tablet sessions can be logged out independently through the tablet's own Settings menu.
Channels and notification messages: an important distinction
Businesses and institutions communicate through channels (톡채널). A channel appears in your friend list under "Channels."
Muting and blocking a channel
To mute notification alerts from a channel, open the chat room. Look for the alert bar at the top of the chat room and use the controls there to turn off notifications. The channel stays in your list.
To block a channel outright: go to the Friends tab, select the Channels list, find the channel under "Added Channels," long-press it, and tap Block.
The distinction most people miss
Blocking a channel stops the advertising and promotional messages that channel sends through KakaoTalk. It does not stop notification messages (알림톡).
Notification messages are a separate product. Businesses send them by phone number, not by channel-add status. Your bank can send order, delivery, and payment notices through 알림톡 even if you have not added their channel, and even after you have blocked it. The two products operate independently.
To block notification messages from a specific business, open their chat room and look for the '알림톡 차단' (block notification messages) button in the alert bar at the top of the chat. You can also check which channels you have blocked at More > Settings > Friends > Manage blocked friends (차단 친구 관리), where each channel entry shows its 알림톡 차단 status.
Be aware that blocking 알림톡 from a business means you will stop receiving order, delivery, and payment notices from that business as well. Consider this before blocking a channel you use for active transactions.
This distinction catches many foreign residents by surprise. Blocking a bank or delivery company's channel and then continuing to receive messages from them is not a bug. The messages are coming through a different product.
Before Kakao Pay activates
Kakao Pay's money-transfer features do not activate at the same time as basic KakaoTalk messaging. They wait on additional steps.
Korean financial law requires identity verification before financial services can activate, and two different laws are doing the work here.
Opening the Korean bank account engages the Real Name Financial Transactions Act (금융실명법), which binds banks and other listed financial companies.
Kakao Pay is an electronic payment operator (전자금융업자), which is not on that list. The verification duty reaching it runs through the Act on Reporting and Using Specified Financial Transaction Information (특정금융정보법) Article 5-2, whose Enforcement Decree Article 2(13) names 「전자금융거래법」에 따른 전자금융업자 directly.
The practical answer is the same under either route: for a foreign resident the primary document is the Alien Registration Card (외국인등록증), and where an ARC has not been issued, a passport or other recognized identification document is accepted in its place, because the specified-financial-information rules check the real name (실지명의) that the 금융실명법 decree defines.
A linked bank account is not a requirement for paying: Kakao Pay's help centre says the payment service works without one.
A practical order:
- Get your Alien Registration Card from the local immigration office.
- Open a Korean bank account.
- Set up Kakao Pay.

Can I use KakaoTalk before I get a Korean SIM card?
