About this festival

Hwacheon's frozen Bukhangang draws over a million visitors each January for ice fishing, ice sledding, and bare-handed trout catching. You drill a hole through a foot of ice, drop a line, and (with luck) catch a sancheoneo trout that the on-site cooks will sashimi or grill for you on the spot.

Getting there

From Seoul: 2 hours by intercity bus from Dong Seoul Bus Terminal to Hwacheon. Many travelers book package buses (KTOurist, KKDay) that include festival entry + ice fishing rental + return. Driving adds flexibility but parking fills early.

Cold — really cold. Pack thermal layers, waterproof boots, and hand warmers. Rental gear (rod, bait) is sold on-site. Family-friendly: kids' ice slides and human curling. Weekends are jammed; weekdays are calmer and warmer (sun on the ice). Pack cash for vendor meals.
