About this festival

Pumba performers were itinerant entertainers of the Joseon and colonial eras, surviving by singing and clowning in village squares. Their repertoire mixed satire, improvisation, and a characteristic rhythmic vocal delivery that modern performers have refined into a theatrical genre. The Eumseong Pumba Festival gives this tradition a full five-day showcase with competitions, open-air concerts, craft markets, and workshops for visitors to learn the Pumba vocal style. It is among the most energetic and unexpected folk festivals in the Chungcheong region.

Getting there

Take an intercity bus from Seoul Express Bus Terminal to Eumseong Bus Terminal (about 1 hour 30 minutes). By car it is about 1 hour 30 minutes from Seoul via Expressway 35 (Chungbu Expressway). The festival venue at Eumseong Seolseong Park is a short taxi ride from Eumseong Bus Terminal.

Tips

The Pumba performances are physical, musical, and rhythmic enough to enjoy without Korean language comprehension. June in Eumseong is warm and humid; bring sunscreen and light clothing. The festival runs through the evening with illuminated outdoor stages. Eumseong is a small city, so plan accommodation in Cheongju (30 minutes away) for more options.
