How weekly holiday pay works

The Labor Standards Act (근로기준법) gives workers at least one paid day off a week on average (Article 55). The pay for that day is the weekly holiday allowance (주휴수당). Part-time workers get it too, in proportion to their scheduled hours.

When it is owed

  • Your scheduled hours average 15 or more a week over 4 weeks. Under 15, the weekly paid holiday does not apply (Article 18).
  • You worked every scheduled day of that week (Enforcement Decree Article 30).
  • You are still employed when that week ends.
  • Nationality does not matter. Article 6 bars different working conditions because of nationality.
  • Small workplaces owe it too. The full Act applies at workplaces with 5 or more workers. At workplaces with 4 or fewer, only the rules listed in Enforcement Decree Table 1 apply, and the weekly paid holiday (Article 55, paragraph 1) is on that list.

The formula

Weekly holiday allowance = (scheduled weekly hours ÷ 40) × 8 × hourly wage.

The official rule divides your scheduled hours over 4 weeks by the number of days a full-time worker is scheduled in those 4 weeks, then multiplies by your hourly wage (Enforcement Decree Table 2). With a standard full-time week of 5 days and 40 hours, both give the same number.

For workers aged 18 and over, scheduled hours count only up to 8 a day and 40 a week (Article 50). So the allowance tops out at 8 hours of pay, even if you work longer. Workers aged 15 to 17 are limited to 7 hours a day and 35 a week (Labor Standards Act Article 69), so their allowance tops out at 7 hours. This calculator uses the adult limits.

Example: 4 hours a day, 5 days a week, at the 2026 minimum wage of ₩10,320. That is 20 hours, so the allowance is 20 ÷ 40 × 8 = 4 hours, or ₩41,280. The week pays ₩206,400 for hours worked plus ₩41,280, a total of ₩247,680.

Why the monthly estimate uses 4.345 weeks

A year has 365 days, about 52.14 weeks. Spread over 12 months, that is about 4.345 weeks a month. Multiplying by 4 would leave out about 2.4 days of pay every month.

Frequently asked questions

Do part-time workers get weekly holiday pay in Korea?

Yes, when three conditions are met. Your scheduled hours average 15 or more a week over 4 weeks (Labor Standards Act Article 18), you work every scheduled day of the week (Enforcement Decree Article 30), and you are still employed when that week ends. The amount is in proportion to your hours: (scheduled weekly hours ÷ 40) × 8 × hourly wage.

Does a workplace with fewer than 5 workers have to pay weekly holiday pay?

Yes. Enforcement Decree Table 1 lists the rules that apply at workplaces with 4 or fewer workers, and Article 55, paragraph 1 (the weekly paid holiday) is on it. The paid public holiday rule in paragraph 2 is not on that list.

Is weekly holiday pay capped?

Yes. For workers aged 18 and over, the cap is 8 hours of pay. Scheduled hours count only up to 8 a day and 40 a week (Article 50), so an adult scheduled for 40 hours or more gets 8 hours of pay as the allowance. Workers aged 15 to 17 are limited to 7 hours a day and 35 a week (Article 69), so their cap is 7 hours of pay.

Do foreign workers get weekly holiday pay?

Yes. Labor Standards Act Article 6 bars employers from setting different working conditions because of nationality. The same 15-hour and attendance conditions apply on any visa.
