Siheung Gaetgol Wetland Festival

Siheung's Gaetgol (tidal inlet) is an ecological anomaly: a functioning tidal wetland that survived urbanisation in the centre of one of Korea's most developed metropolitan corridors. The annual festival celebrates this landscape with guided ecology walks through the reed marshes, traditional salt-field demonstrations (Siheung was once a major salt-production area), and hands-on mudflat programmes. The setting, just 30 kilometres from Seoul, makes it one of the most accessible nature-focused festival destinations in the country.

Take Seoul Metro Line 4 to Jeongwang Station, then a short bus or taxi to Siheung Gaetgol Eco Park (about 10 minutes). By car from Seoul it is about 40 minutes via Expressway 15.

The wetland is a genuine nature reserve; stay on marked paths during ecology walks to protect the reed beds. The salt-making demonstration is one of the more hands-on experiences at the festival. Autumn weekends can be busy; arriving early gives better access to the ecology programmes. English-language interpretation is available at the visitor centre.
