Jeju Haenyeo Festival

Jeju's haenyeo (female free-divers) are one of the most recognised symbols of the island's distinct culture, recognised by UNESCO in 2016. The festival, held annually on Haenyeo Day (the third Saturday of September), centres on the Haenyeo Museum in Gujwa-eup with live demonstrations in the sea, exhibitions of traditional diving equipment, and community events involving active haenyeo. The gathering is as much a reunion for the aging community of divers as a public celebration, giving it an intimacy that larger festivals lack.

Fly to Jeju International Airport, then take a local bus (Line 201 or 710-2) toward Gujwa-eup (about 1 hour 20 minutes by bus or 50 minutes by car). A rental car makes the trip significantly easier. Taxis from Jeju City to Haenyeo Museum take about 40 minutes.

The festival is genuinely small and community-centred; managing expectations is key. The Haenyeo Museum is open year-round (admission around 1,100 won) and is worth visiting independently outside the festival. The eastern coast of Jeju around Gujwa and Seongsanpo is less touristed than the west and south coasts, making the trip feel more authentic.
