Controlled-burn festival on the slopes of Saebyeol Oreum in Jeju, originally a livestock-pasture renewal practice turned dramatic mass-spectacle.
Jeju farmers historically burned old grass on volcanic oreum slopes each spring to clear ticks and renew pasture. The festival formalized the practice in 1997, today the burn covers an entire oreum hillside in synchronized flame, visible from kilometers away. Plus traditional games, Jeju cuisine, and oreum-climbing daytime events.
From Jeju International Airport: 30-40 minutes by taxi or shuttle bus to Saebyeol Oreum. Local bus 282 stops nearby. The night-burn finale is the centerpiece; arrive in late afternoon to climb the oreum first.
Dates depend on weather, high winds or rain shift the burn. Verify timing 24-48 hours ahead via the official site or Jeju tourism office. Bring a windproof jacket; oreum-tops are exposed.
