Prolific is a real platform. It is a marketplace of research studies with an invitation waitlist, occasional work, and a payout system that may stop a foreign resident in Korea from moving the money to a Korean bank. This guide covers each of those facts so you can decide before you spend time on it.
Short verdict
- Legitimate: Prolific is headquartered in London, publishes a minimum pay rate, and publishes its cash-out rules.
- Not a job: Prolific describes the platform as one for occasional studies, and says participants are independent contractors, not employees.
- Korea is supported, with a waitlist. You join a waitlist first. Some people are invited within hours; others wait months or longer.
- The Korea catch is payout. Prolific pays only through PayPal. Ask PayPal Korea whether you can link your Korean bank account before you rely on this income.

What Prolific is and who runs it
Researchers create a study on Prolific and set the estimated time, the reward per hour, and the participant criteria. The study itself usually runs on an outside site such as Qualtrics, Gorilla, or Typeform. You click through from Prolific, complete it, and wait for the researcher to approve your submission.
Prolific says its headquarters are in London, UK. We did not verify the company registration or funding details against a primary source, so this guide does not list them.
What the work actually is
Prolific's participant page lists task types such as decision-making games, reflective questionnaires, and opinions on website designs. It also lists evaluating machine learning models.
AI work has its own tier. Prolific calls these participants AI Taskers: people with verified experience or who passed a targeted skill assessment. Examples of assessments are fact-checking, comparing AI-generated responses, and structured writing. Prolific's page on this is written for researchers. It says researchers should expect to pay higher rates for these participants, but it does not say what a participant will earn.
Language studies work the same way. Prolific says you take a short assessment to verify your fluency in a language you speak, and the check appears on your dashboard if Prolific thinks you are a good fit. We found no named Korean-language study or pool, so do not assume Korean-language work exists.
Can you join from Korea?
Prolific says it is open to participants from most countries of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) who are over 18 and have a verified account. Korea appears on its country list. Eligibility is based on where you currently live, not your nationality.
Access runs through a waitlist, even in supported countries. Prolific says the waitlist is not first come, first served. Some people are invited within hours, and others wait months or longer. If invited, you receive an email to create your account.
ID and phone checks
Prolific verifies identity with a provider called Onfido. You need a valid, unexpired ID document issued by your current country of residence, and you take a selfie video. Prolific lists residence permit cards among accepted types. The page does not say whether the Korean Alien Registration Card (외국인등록증) passes the check. If you fail the checks, Prolific says it cannot offer you a participant account.
Prolific also shows an error for phone numbers that do not match the country of your account. Prolific says VPNs, proxies, and iCloud Private Relay can cause it. If you kept a foreign SIM, this may matter for you. That link to Korean residents is our inference, not something Prolific states.
Pay and payout
Researchers set the reward for each study. Prolific sets an absolute minimum hourly rate and recommends a higher one; both are listed in its help centre. These are floors and recommendations for researchers. They are not an income estimate. How much you earn depends mostly on how many studies you qualify for, and Prolific does not publish a Korea figure.
PayPal is the only payout method
Prolific says payments can only go through PayPal. It cannot send direct bank transfers. Your PayPal account must be in your own name, and each Prolific account needs its own PayPal address. Prolific says it does not charge a fee for cashing out. PayPal may apply fees afterward if currency conversion is required.
You can cash out once your approved balances across GBP and USD pass the threshold Prolific lists. Balances still waiting for approval do not count. Prolific also applies waiting periods after you add or change a PayPal address, and it says it cannot shorten them. Prolific asks for a residential address that should match your PayPal account when it verifies your payment method.
The PayPal Korea limit
This is the Korea-specific problem. Ask PayPal Korea support whether you can link your Korean bank account before you rely on Prolific as income. PayPal Korea has a help page on linking a bank account. The same page says a business registered in Korea needs its business registration number (사업자등록번호) to add a local bank account, and without one, only a US bank account can be added. PayPal Korea's withdrawal page says withdrawals go to a local bank account in Korean won (KRW) or a US bank account.
PayPal Korea's bank-linking help page also says a PayPal balance you cannot withdraw can still be spent online or sent to others.
Before you spend hours on studies, get that answer from PayPal, not from a forum post.
What the reviews say
When we checked Trustpilot on October 17, 2026, most reviews of Prolific were positive. This is a snapshot of unverified user opinions. Trustpilot does not fact-check reviews, and the score changes over time.
Reviewers praise the interface, quick payouts, and interesting studies. The recurring complaints are:
- Accounts suspended without explanation.
- Support that runs through a chatbot, with no human reply.
- Few studies, and frequent screen-outs, for people outside the US, UK, and Europe.
- Studies that run longer than estimated, or fail technically and leave participants unpaid.
We could not read Reddit or Glassdoor for this review, so this guide does not describe them.
Scams and fake messages
People send fake messages that claim to come from Prolific. Prolific says its real messages come from listed sender IDs, and that it does not ask for your login details, identity documents, or personal information by message. It says identity verification happens only through your Prolific account and Onfido. If a message asks for any of those, do not reply. Open Prolific directly in your browser and check your account.
Prolific also says it will terminate accounts involved in account sharing. Do not lend or borrow an account.
Can you do this on your Korean visa?
This is general context, not legal advice. We found no official source that says whether paid research participation counts as work for visa purposes, so do not assume either answer.
- F-2, F-4, F-5, F-6: these visas generally allow free work. Check your own visa's rules.
- E-series visas: work outside your visa's activity may need permission from Immigration.
- D-2 and D-4 (student visas): foreign students need an activity-outside-status permit (체류자격 외 활동허가) before paid work. Weekly hour limits vary, so do not rely on a fixed number.
- D-10, D-8, and other visas: the answer depends on your case.
Call the Immigration Contact Center at 1345 and describe the work: what you do, where you do it, who pays you, and how often.
Korean tax
Our freelancer 3.3% refund guide and foreign resident tax guide cover the filing details. Here is how they apply to Prolific.
What Prolific says. Prolific says you are responsible for deciding whether you need to report earnings to your tax office. It lets you download a list of completed submissions and rewards for a tax return. Prolific also collects personal details and reports earnings under rules such as the EU's DAC7. It says it reports to the tax authority of your country of residence, and in other countries to the corresponding national tax authority. We did not establish whether Korea's National Tax Service receives reports from Prolific.
The 5-year rule may not transfer. Under the Income Tax Act, a foreign resident with 5 years or less of domicile or residence in Korea over the prior 10 years is taxed on foreign-source income only when it is paid in Korea or remitted to Korea. Prolific studies are done from a device in Korea, so that income may count as Korea-source whoever pays you. A PayPal balance you spend in Korea may also count as bringing money in. We found no source on either point. Confirm both with the National Tax Service or a tax professional.
Filing. For most people, comprehensive income tax (종합소득세) is filed from May 1 to May 31 of the following year. If you must submit a sincere filing confirmation (성실신고확인서), which applies to businesses with revenue at or above a set level for their industry, the deadline is June 30.
Withholding. Prolific is a UK company paying through PayPal, so Korean withholding is not expected. We did not verify this.
Should you sign up?
Prolific can make sense if:
- You want occasional side money and can wait for a waitlist invitation.
- PayPal Korea has confirmed how you can withdraw, or you are happy to spend the balance online.
- Your visa allows the work, or Immigration has confirmed it.
Prolific is the wrong choice if:
- You need steady income.
- You need the money in a Korean bank account and PayPal Korea cannot confirm that route.
- You want a person to help if your account is suspended. Reviewers report chatbot-only support.
To start, join the waitlist on the Prolific website.
FAQ
Is Prolific legit?
Yes. Prolific is a real research-participant platform headquartered in London, and it publishes a minimum pay rate and its cash-out rules. The limits are practical: access is by waitlist, studies are occasional, and payouts are PayPal-only. Treat it as occasional side money, not a job.
Is Prolific an AI training job?
No. Prolific is a marketplace of research studies such as questionnaires and decision-making tasks. Some studies ask you to evaluate AI models. A higher tier called AI Taskers exists for people who pass skill assessments, but Prolific's page about it is written for researchers and does not state participant pay.
Can I join Prolific from Korea?
Korea appears on Prolific's list of supported countries. Eligibility depends on where you currently live, not your nationality. You still join a waitlist, and Prolific says some people are invited within hours while others wait months or longer.
How do I get paid on Prolific from Korea?
Prolific pays only through PayPal, in your own name. Ask PayPal Korea support whether you can add your Korean bank account before you plan around Prolific income. A PayPal balance can still be spent online.
How much does Prolific pay?
Researchers set the reward for each study. Prolific publishes a minimum hourly rate that researchers must meet and a higher recommended rate. Prolific did not publish an average earnings figure that we could find, and the number of studies open to you in Korea is unknown.
Do I owe Korean tax on Prolific earnings?
Possibly. Prolific says you are responsible for deciding whether to report earnings to your tax office. Studies are done from a device in Korea, so the 5-year foreign-income rule may not apply. We did not find a source that settles this. Ask the National Tax Service or a tax professional.
Can I do Prolific studies on my Korean visa?
We found no official source that says whether paid research participation counts as work for visa purposes. Do not assume either answer. Student visa (D-2, D-4) holders in particular should ask before they start. Call the Immigration Contact Center at 1345 and describe the work.
