You saw a micro1 role, maybe on LinkedIn or on Seoulstart's board, and now an AI recruiter named Zara wants to interview you. Before you spend an hour on it, you want to know two things: is micro1 real, and does it pay?
micro1 is a real company, and it says it pays through Deel in USD, twice a month. The risk is the wait. You can pass the interview and still not get a project. This guide covers who micro1 is, how joining works, how pay works, who cannot join, what people complain about, and what to check if you live in Korea.
Want to see current openings first? Seoulstart lists micro1 roles on the micro1 board, and every platform on the AI training jobs board.
Who runs micro1
The contracting company is micro1, Inc. micro1's candidate terms, last updated July 21, 2026, say they are governed by Delaware law. Disputes go to confidential arbitration in English through JAMS (Judicial Arbitration and Mediation Services). The founder and CEO is Ali Ansari.
micro1 describes itself as an AI human-data training platform that works with frontier AI labs. On September 12, 2025, it announced a $35M raise at a $500M valuation. micro1 also says that tens of thousands of experts are actively contributing. That is a company claim, and no number is given.
A funded company with a named CEO and a published contract is not a scam. That still does not tell you how much work you will get.
How joining works
micro1 says you do not join once. You apply to specific roles. Here is the path, step by step.
- Apply to a role. You apply on micro1's Opportunities Portal. micro1 says its AI recruiter, Zara, interviews every applicant, with questions tailored to the role's skills.
- Do the Zara interview. You answer out loud. micro1 says the interview lasts 20 to 40 minutes, with about 7 minutes per skill. The session is recorded so human recruiters can review it.
- Pass ID verification. After you pass, a third-party provider checks your ID. micro1 lists a passport, driver's license, or national ID. You scan the original physical document with your camera and take a selfie. micro1 says English or Arabic IDs usually clear in minutes. IDs in other languages may need manual review of up to 72 hours.
- Wait for human review. micro1 says "Hiring manager reviewing" means you performed well and joined its vetted talent pool, but placement is not guaranteed. It says this step can take up to 30 days. A status of "Under review" can take up to 48 hours. micro1 also says there is no fixed timeline for these statuses.
- Get an offer and onboard. If you are selected, you accept the offer in the talent portal, sign a Deel contract, and finish a KYC identity check in Deel. A background check through KarmaCheck is normally part of onboarding to a project, and the check can differ by project.
A few details that save time:
- Skills carry over. micro1 says certified skills count from July 2025 onward, so a later application can skip part or all of an interview. Some newer role pages still ask for a role-specific interview, even if you interviewed before.
- You consent to recording. By accepting the candidate terms, you agree to record your answers, audio, and video. micro1 owns the interview results. You must be at least 18, and you must answer without third-party help.
- A failed interview can come with feedback. If your status is "Did not qualify," micro1 says you can request detailed feedback from your Talent Dashboard.
- No job is promised. micro1 states that certification makes you eligible for opportunities but does not guarantee placement. Access depends on project requirements and availability.
For one applicant's path, a Reddit user wrote that they joined on May 13, completed 7 AI interviews, had 4 move to hiring manager review, and got an offer on June 6. That is one person's account, not a typical timeline.
What the work is
micro1 describes three types of work: frontier evaluations (expert review that helps train foundation AI models), real-world robotics (recording everyday physical tasks), and contextual evaluations for enterprise AI agents.
Other things micro1 says about the work:
- Hours. The expected commitment is about 15 to 20 hours per week, depending on client requirements. You can keep your day job. Individual roles differ, so read the listing.
- Equipment. You use your own laptop. micro1 does not supply devices.
- The client is a secret at first. micro1 says it cannot name the client until you are onboarded.
- Projects end. micro1 says projects ("pipelines") continue as long as the client has work. If a client cancels one, micro1 says it will do its best to move you to a similar pipeline.
- Some roles ask for purchases. One generalist role asks you to complete real online purchases and cancellations with your own payment method, under an approved reimbursement process. Read that kind of requirement before you apply.
Korean-language work exists on micro1. One example role, posted September 19, 2026, asked for Korean transcription experts to transcribe Korean and English audio. It said no prior AI experience was required. Roles open and close, so check the board for current ones.
How pay works
micro1 says you see the pay rate before you accept a project and can decline without penalty. It also says there is a defined path to appeal decisions about pay, status, or a rejection.
The portal shows an hourly range for each role. On October 25, 2026, it listed 278 roles. Two examples from that day were a procurement and vendor management role at "$45-90/h" and an AI agent tester role at "$25-45/h." Another example role page said "Up to $90/hour equivalent" with about 10 hours per task. Rates change daily, so treat these as examples and check the live listing.
The most important thing to check is the pay structure. micro1 describes three:
- Hourly. You are paid for approved tracked hours. micro1 says hourly time is tracked in the Hubstaff desktop app, and only while you are actively working.
- Pay-per-task. Each approved task pays your hourly rate multiplied by a Project Payout Multiple, regardless of how long it takes you.
- Flat fee per approved task. micro1 says no payment is made for incomplete, rejected, or unapproved submissions.
One Reddit applicant, around April 2026, said a posting listed $20 to $60 per hour, but their contract paid 0.5 times a base rate of $45 for every deliverable, regardless of hours worked. A micro1 staff reply in the same thread said some candidates are offered task-based rates, called Pay Per Task roles. The lesson: read the contract, not just the ad.
When money arrives. micro1 says it pays in USD, twice a month, through Deel.
| Work done | Paid around |
|---|---|
| 1st to the 15th | the 20th |
| 16th to the end of the month | the 5th of the next month |
micro1 says approvals typically happen around the 3rd and 18th, payroll runs on Pacific time, and a payday that falls on a weekend or a US holiday moves to the next business day. In Deel, pick the correct country of jurisdiction and upload every required document. micro1 says missing documents delay payment.
This guide did not verify whether a contractor living in Korea can withdraw Deel payments to a Korean bank account, or what that costs. Check Deel's withdrawal options for your country before you rely on a route.
micro1 also says it pays a quarterly "rest credits" bonus of about 1%, with a $75 minimum, to experts paid in at least 4 biweekly cycles in a quarter, starting October 1, 2026. Read the current terms on micro1's support page before you count on it.
Your contract: what you agree to
micro1 says experts are independent contractors, not employees. You are responsible for your own taxes, social security contributions, insurance, and benefits, and you provide your own equipment.
Other terms from micro1's expert agreement page:
- Work you create belongs to the company, and you waive moral rights to it.
- The client's identity and the contract itself are confidential.
- You can end the agreement with 5 business days' written notice. micro1 can end it immediately on written notice.
- Disputes go to binding JAMS arbitration, and you waive a jury trial and class actions.
- You must not currently be employed by a foundational AI model company.
- The contract has a standard clause on biometric data rights. micro1 says most projects do not require voice, video, or biometric capture.
Who cannot join
micro1 says it hires from around the world. It also says that, because of legal, regulatory, and security requirements, it cannot hire people who reside in these 21 countries and regions: Afghanistan, Belarus, China, Cuba, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Hong Kong, Iran, Iraq, Libya, Macao, Myanmar, North Korea, Russia, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, Syria, Venezuela, Ukraine, Yemen, and Ethiopia.
Three points matter for readers in Korea:
- South Korea is not on the list. The rule is about where you reside.
- If you hold a Chinese or Russian passport but live in Korea, the list does not name your country of residence. micro1's FAQ words the rule by where you reside and does not mention citizenship, so ask micro1 support before you invest time.
- Individual roles can add limits. One role is open only to experts in Latin America and the Caribbean. Another asks for someone located in the United States. Read the location line on each listing.
Common complaints
On October 25, 2026, Trustpilot showed micro1.ai with a high average score from many thousands of reviews, most of them five-star. Read that with care. The profile has a paid Trustpilot subscription, micro1 invites customers to review, and micro1 had not replied to negative reviews. Most reviews describe the AI interview itself, written right after it. That tells you the interview is easy to complete. It tells you little about pay or how much work you will get.
The complaints that show up in community threads are about getting in and about contract type, not about missing payments:
- Long waits and no work. Applicants describe waiting in review, or passing the interview and getting no project.
- Hourly ads that become per-task contracts. See the pay section above.
- Paused projects. One Reddit user said they completed two tasks and then submissions were "paused."
Not every report is negative. In the same Reddit thread, another user wrote that micro1 paid them on time and that they had no issues. An older thread in r/RemoteJobs includes a reply from someone who said they were paid around $15 for an hour's work. These are single accounts, so treat them as signals, not proof.
How to spot a fake micro1 message
- micro1 says official emails come only from @micro1.ai, @micro1.io, or @micro1.co.
- micro1 lists verification@micro1.ai for ID verification help and support@micro1.ai for general support.
- ID checks go through a third-party provider, and your contract and KYC go through Deel.
- Do not pay anyone to apply or to get a role.
If a message comes from another domain, do not click it. Go to the Opportunities Portal directly.
If you live in Korea
This is a general overview, not legal or tax advice. Your visa and your dates decide the answer.
Visa and work permission
Under Article 20 of the Immigration Act (출입국관리법), a foreigner staying in Korea who wants to do activities of another status alongside their own must get permission for activities outside status (체류자격외활동허가) from the Minister of Justice in advance. HiKorea says you must get this permission from the competent immigration office before you start.
International students on D-2 or D-4 visas are barred from work outside study unless they have this permission first. Do not assume a student permit covers remote platform work. Ask first.
Whether remote USD work for a US company counts as an activity outside your status is a question for Immigration, not for micro1. Call the Immigration Contact Center (외국인종합안내센터) at 1345. English is available. Describe the work exactly: you are an independent contractor for a US company, you work remotely from Korea, and you are paid in USD through Deel.
Tax
Under Article 3 of the Income Tax Act (소득세법), a foreign resident with 5 years or less of domicile or residence in Korea in the prior 10 years is taxed on foreign-source income only to the extent it is paid in Korea or remitted into Korea.
Two cautions. First, this guide did not find an official page that settles whether work you perform while physically in Korea counts as foreign-source income, so the five-year rule may not cover it. Second, micro1's help pages mention Form 1099-NEC, a US form, "if a relevant tax form is issued." Do not assume you will receive one.
Freelance income is reported through comprehensive income tax (종합소득세) filing, which runs May 1 to May 31 of the following year. For the filing basics, read the Korea foreign resident tax guide and the freelancer withholding tax refund guide. Confirm your own case with the National Tax Service or a tax professional.
Should you apply?
micro1 is worth a try if:
- You have a skill the portal lists, such as law, medicine, software engineering, or a language, and you can spend an hour on an interview with no guarantee.
- You can treat micro1 as extra income, not your main income, while you wait for a project.
- You will read the pay structure in your contract before you accept.
Wait or look elsewhere if:
- You need guaranteed hours from week one.
- You live in one of the 21 listed countries or regions.
- You are on a student or work visa and have not cleared the permission question with Immigration.
While you wait, apply on more than one platform. See how micro1 compares in the Mercor review, Is Mindrift Legit?, and Is Outlier AI Legit?. When you are ready, browse current micro1 roles on the micro1 board or compare all platforms on the AI training jobs board.
FAQ
Is micro1 legit?
Yes, it is a real company. micro1, Inc. is a US AI-training data company that announced a $35M raise at a $500M valuation in September 2025. It says it pays experts in USD twice a month through Deel. The common problem is not payment. It is waiting for a project after you pass the interview, because micro1 says certification does not guarantee work.
How does the micro1 AI interview with Zara work?
Zara is micro1's AI recruiter. You answer spoken questions about the skills a role needs. micro1 says the interview lasts 20 to 40 minutes and is recorded so human recruiters can review it. You must answer without outside help. If you do not pass, you can request feedback from your Talent Dashboard.
How much does micro1 pay?
It depends on the role, and micro1 shows the rate before you accept. Hourly ranges are listed per role on the Opportunities Portal. One example role page says up to $90 per hour equivalent. Check the live listing, because roles and rates change. Also check whether your contract pays by the hour, per task, or a flat fee.
How and when does micro1 pay?
micro1 says payment is in USD, twice a month, through Deel. Work from the 1st to the 15th is paid around the 20th. Work from the 16th to the end of the month is paid around the 5th of the next month. Hourly work is tracked in the Hubstaff app. Check your own contract for the exact terms.
Which countries can join micro1?
micro1 says it hires worldwide but cannot hire people who reside in 21 listed countries and regions: Afghanistan, Belarus, China, Cuba, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Hong Kong, Iran, Iraq, Libya, Macao, Myanmar, North Korea, Russia, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, Syria, Venezuela, Ukraine, Yemen, and Ethiopia. South Korea is not on the list. Some individual roles add their own location rules.
Can I do micro1 work on a Korean visa?
It depends on your visa. If the work counts as an activity outside your visa status, you must get permission (체류자격외활동허가) from Immigration before you start. International students on D-2 or D-4 visas are barred from work outside study unless they have that permission first. Call 1345 and describe your case.
Do I owe Korean tax on micro1 income?
If you have had 5 years or less of domicile or residence in Korea in the prior 10 years, the Income Tax Act taxes your foreign-source income only to the extent it is paid in or remitted into Korea. No official page found settles whether work you perform while in Korea counts as foreign-source. Confirm with the National Tax Service or a tax professional.
