About this festival
Cheongsong apples are considered among the finest in Korea, grown at altitude in a valley surrounded by the dramatic rock formations of Juwangsan National Park. The festival, held annually in late October when the apples are at their sweetest, combines a market of direct-from-farm sales with picking experiences, apple-themed cuisine, and cultural performances. Juwangsan's autumn foliage peaks during the same period, making this a rare confluence of food festival and spectacular mountain scenery in a single short trip.
Getting there
Take an intercity bus from Dong Seoul Bus Terminal to Cheongsong (about 3 hours). By car, Cheongsong is about 3 hours from Seoul via Expressway 35 toward Pohang. A rental car is strongly recommended as public transport within Cheongsong-gun is sparse.
Tips
Cheongsong is genuinely remote, so planning overnight accommodation in the town or nearby Andong is wise. The Juwang Canyon and Juwang Waterfall within Juwangsan National Park are very close and pair naturally with the apple festival. Staff at the main market usually have basic English; prices at farm stalls are fixed and clearly labelled.
