About this festival
Pungmul is a communal music form combining buk drum, janggu hourglass drum, kkwaenggwari small gong, and jing large gong with acrobatic dancing and flag-waving. The Bupyeong Pungmul Festival gathers professional and community troupes for competitive performances, workshops, and a colourful street procession through the Bupyeong commercial district. The festival has been on MCST's designation list for multiple consecutive cycles and is regarded as one of the strongest regional pungmul events in the Gyeonggi-Incheon area.
Getting there
Take Seoul Metro Line 1 or 7 to Bupyeong Station (about 40 minutes from Seoul Station). The festival venue in and around Bupyeong Culture Street is within walking distance of Bupyeong Station exits.
Tips
The street procession on the main festival day is the most accessible event, passing through the commercial area around the station. The competitive performances require ticketed seating but street events are free. Bupyeong has a well-known underground food market near the station.
