What this actually is

You evaluate AI responses in the target language, rate translation quality, write prompts in your native language, and flag errors. Not professional translation work in the traditional sense. The platform title (German Language and Literature Expert (German)) reflects the rate band and the expertise required, not the day-to-day work.

Original posting from Mercor

Mercor is seeking experienced German Linguistic Experts to join a cutting-edge AI research project in partnership with a leading research lab. This role centers on evaluating how effectively a large language model (LLM) performs in French-language tasks and on curating high-quality French linguistic data to train and improve the model’s understanding and generation capabilities.

**Key Responsibilities:**

  • Evaluate the quality and accuracy of LLM-generated German text across various use cases (e.g., translation, summarization, dialogue, grammar correction).
  • Edit, refine, or rewrite German content to ensure it meets linguistic, cultural, and literary standards.
  • Annotate German texts for grammatical, syntactic, semantic, and stylistic features.
  • Identify model errors and linguistic shortcomings; collaborate with AI researchers to improve LLM performance in German.
  • Provide detailed literary and linguistic feedback to guide ongoing model training and evaluation efforts.

**You’re a strong fit if you have:**

  • Native or near-native fluency in German, with excellent command of grammar, syntax, and stylistics.
  • Professional experience in literary editing, copywriting, criticism, or NLP-related linguistic annotation in German.
  • A strong understanding of literary complexity, tone, and genre-specific conventions, as well as regional language variations.
  • Interest in AI, translation technologies, or LLM-driven language research (preferred but not required).
  • Impeccable attention to detail and ability to identify subtle translation errors or unnatural phrasing.
  • Strong written communication skills and experience working with remote, distributed teams.

Why Join

  • Contribute to cutting-edge AI research in partnership with a leading research lab.
  • Work on high-impact projects that directly support the development of advanced AI systems.
  • Gain hands-on exposure to state-of-the-art AI research and development.
  • Join a fast-moving project where your expertise and judgment can have a meaningful impact.
